This week it’s all about Managing Conflict.
“Listen first. Give others a chance to talk. Let them finish. Do not resist, defend or debate. This only raises barriers. Try to build bridges of understanding.”
• Do describe the outcomes you want in a constructive and positive way
• Do be aware that your own gestures can signal tension or distract from your message
• Do persevere, coping with conflict requires patience and persistence
• Don’t get angry, this will only inflame the situation
• Don’t stare but maintain eye contact.
• Don’t prejudge what’s going on. Take time to analyse the facts of a situation
There are no magic formulas to conflict resolution, but the process below will help you by alerting you to what stage is coming next and what you should be working towards.
Sometimes people get stuck in conflict. It then becomes more important to achieve movement in the process rather than concentrate on the specific issues of difficulty or difference.
Identification of the Problem
Do not work with opinions, assumptions, hearsay or emotions. Facts are less able to be disputed
Arguments and Responses
Communicate fully with the other person, discover where they are coming from and why they’ve taken the position they have
Developing and Evaluating Options
Create a climate for sharing ideas which are quickly generated, solutions suggested… concessions made and deals done
Resolution and Agreement
Whatever form of agreement for option or line of action to be taken, those involved accept that the conflict is resolved and that things can move forward
