I am a fan of football, a big fan of Arsene Wenger and a huge fan of Arsenal Football Club.
But the point of this post is to highlight the challenges we all face in Managing Talent, whether it is in business, sport or even within our family.
I found this article from 2013 where Arsene describes his personal views on managing talent.
He provides some great insights… but one that particularly caught my eye was this.
When identifying the best talent he looks for dedicated, consistent and determined motivation in his young players. The type of motivation that will help them to make it on the big football stage in the future. He describes how having motivated young players is not enough and talented players require a certain type of motivation.
If a football club is to succeed it really needs to seek out, harness and develop the best talent and nurture it to deliver the results expected from shareholders, team mates and more importantly (in my opinion) the fans.
And it’s a similar case in business. The goal is to have talent feeding through the various teams to ensure a bright future at the top of the competitor table and exceed the expectations of the raving fans which we call customers.
Mr Wenger’s views easily translate to the business world.
And… I would love to know what yours are.
I’m sure we all manage talent in some similar and some quite remarkably different ways.
