Looking after your employees is similar to looking after your family. Whether young or old… we all have a tendency to dribble.
We have probably all felt the impact of a family member who is upset or has a bit of a “strop on” or is a bit demotivated, feeling sad, frustrated or even angry about something that is not going well in their lives.
The way they behave “dribbles” through to other family members and can have a significant negative impact on the mood within the house.
Like your family, at work, you spend a lot of time together. There is usually a mix of temperaments and personalities and everyone has a role that sits within a rigid or loose hierarchy.
A well-run business is like a well-run family home – both have an impact on the success, outcomes and results that the people within achieve together.
As a leader or manager your positive or negative demeanour will most definitely impact on your bottom line. The culture and climate felt by your employees within your “working family” will directly impact on their motivation, willingness to participate and also affect their well-being and mental state.
We’re not saying here that you need to adopt a style of management or leadership that demonstrates a pure parenting style but there is something to be said for creating and influencing a working family that have;
The list is not limited… there are lots of lessons to relate the way a family operates to your employees work. There are also lots of indicators for a dysfunctional family that could be applied in much the same way.
The “Dribble Down” Effect
These are the often hidden and unwanted powers of the background bored, unhappy, apathetic, cynics and saboteurs.
You may have some employees that are in the back office / areas of the business while others work within a customer facing front end.
Regardless of where your employees are situated, negative attitudes from them can have a highly damaging Dribble Down effect that flows right though to your customers.
If an employee at the back end of the business is bitter or upset, his or her performance is more than likely to suffer and their behaviours be exaggerated either passively or aggressively. The negativity and lack of the healthy family habits highlighted above will eventually “Dribble” through to employees in other areas of the business and worst of all, those directly in contact with your customers.
Therefore, it is critical for you as an employer to be in touch with the engagement and family well-being of all your employees, especially your managers and team leaders.
Be sure that each department head is on board and convinced that the happiness, well-being and health of their employees are Dribble limiting… a focus that impacts on their own motivation and results too.
A company is only as successful as the employees who work for it.
